What’s Happening at Corvidae

Nothing like a good hand pump, well purge, to get your blood flowing in the morning! ⠀

Purging is the process of removing stagnant water from a well, immediately prior to fresh ground water sampling. Water sitting in a well, over time, changes and can that alter the water quality and it stagnates. ⠀

Well purging is done to ensure the samples are as accurate and are representative of the actual ground water giving us a clear indication of the contaminant levels within the vicinity of that well. ⠀

Antler Shed:

Not just dog chews! A number of little critters chew on shed antlers to increase their intake of calcium and other minerals. ⠀

Many nutrients are that are found in antlers, are also found in bone. These nutrients include things such as calcium, phosphorus, and protein. These nutrients are very important for animal growth. ⠀

Animals that utilize antlers in their diets are primarily Rodents. Rodents such as mice, squirrels, and porcupines will chew on antler for nutrients and to wear down their always growing teeth. ⠀

Often, even bears, foxes, opossums, otters and many other types of animals have also been known to gnaw on antlers.⠀

Wildlife Rescue⠀

We have all come across injured or sick wildlife; but do you know what to do when you come across such a scenario? 😊⠀

How to tell if an animal is in distress: ⠀
*You see obvious signs of injury ⠀
*The animal may seem ‘sleepy’ or doesn't respond as you approach, appears dizzy or disoriented. ⠀
*The animal has obviously been hit by a car, ran into a window, or has been caught by a pet ⠀
*The animal is obviously a baby and has crying, covered in bugs, or are cold and not moving (Just make sure that mama isn't around and the baby is truly in distress) ⠀

How to safely capture a wild animal: ⠀
*Do NOT try to catch a wild animal if it risks your safety ⠀
*Use a towel or jacket to cover the animal ⠀
*Place them in a sturdy box lined with a towel and with air holes and a secure lid. ⠀
*Keep the contained animal in a warm, quiet and dark place.⠀
*If the animal is wet, or is a baby, you can tuck a heating pad set to ‘LOW’ under half of the box to keep them warm ⠀

If you do not know what to do, call your local wildlife rehabilitator or the BC SPCA Call Centre at 1-855-622-7722.⠀

or Visit @wildarc for more info.⠀

Why we chose the name Corvidae... ⠀

Corvidae is a cosmopolitan family of oscine passerine birds that contains the crows, ravens, rooks, jackdaws, jays, magpies, treepies, choughs, and nutcrackers. In common English, they are known as the crow family, or, more technically, corvids. ⠀

We chose the name Corvidae Environmental as this family of birds is not only one of Canada’s most hearty birds; but they also display remarkable intelligence, adaptability, resilience and they have a very clever and often humorous demeanor. ⠀

Just like our team at Corvidae!⠀

Another great start to one of our many projects with the CRD! ⠀

The Mayne Island Regional Trail Route will be developed on the north side of Village Bay Road between the BC Ferries terminal and Naylor Road. Construction started this Spring 2021 with completion expected for 2023. Currently, Corvidae Environmental has been helping the CRD with the initial Environmental Assessments and Planning Phase of this project. ⠀

“In the environmental assessment, consideration is given to aspects such as the vegetation, invasive species, wildlife/habitat, and erosion and environmental protection measures are identified to minimize potential for disturbance. Other actions being taken to reduce potential impacts include working with the Mayne Island Conservancy Society on a pre-construction native plant removal opportunity. Through specific control measures, impact to wildlife is minimized by clearing the route outside of the migratory bird window and amphibian breeding period, retaining shelter habitat for wildlife and requiring specific erosion control measures be put in place" - CRD Website ⠀

Our Local, Urban Forest is Growing! ⠀

VICTORIA, BC — "New research shows Victoria’s urban forest grew between 2013 and 2019. LiDAR data shows vegetation canopy increased by 45 hectares. The research found growth in vegetation area coverage in every Victoria neighbourhood, including the downtown core. "⠀

"Victoria’s urban forest is comprised of trees, shrubs and groundcover on private and public land. There are approximately 150,000 trees in parks, natural areas, residential gardens and backyards. Roughly 1/4 of the urban forest is managed by the City, while the remaining 75 per cent is on private and other public land." @cityofvictoria ⠀

Project: Sooke Hills Wilderness Park⠀

Proud to call this project one of our own! ⠀

Creating a safe place where humans and the wilderness can meet is one of our favorite kinds of projects. From monitoring to creating ECSP’s, we were there to help ensure this a successful venture with the @capital_regional_district and Westbrook Consulting.⠀

Sooke Hills Wilderness Park is the largest park in the region. Here you can find Mount Braden one of the highest peaks in the CRD Park System. This park consists of two separate land areas located on either side of Goldstream catchment. The north section was opened in 2017, and the south section was opened late 2020. ⠀

Have you visited the new South Access point yet!? It’s worth the trek! ⠀

Maiden Hair Fern⠀

There’s a reason no one can keep these beauties alive at home – they require very specific habitat conditions to thrive! ⠀

You’ll find Maiden Hair Ferns in shady, moist, humid forests, or on rocks and cliffs, often within the spray zone of waterfalls. ⠀

These waterproof plants are also found in riparian areas of our local streams, where water splashes and seeps down steep banks. ⠀

Dead trees aren’t dead!⠀

Dead trees and fallen logs have an important role in ecosystems by providing wildlife habitat, cycling nutrients, assisting in plant growth, decreases erosion, and aids in drainage, soil moisture and carbon storage, among many other benefits. ⠀

There are two types of dead trees that contribute these things to the ecosystem, Logs and Snags.⠀

Logs are fallen dead trees and help replace nutrients in the forest floor, act as nesting places for amphibians, snakes, insects and more. ⠀

Snags are standing dead trees that play an important role in the lifecycles of hundreds of species of wildlife as they provide a place to nest, rest, eat and grow. ⠀
