The Rufous Hummingbird makes one of the longest migratory journeys of any bird in the world, as measured by body size. At just over 3 inches long, its roughly 3,900-mile movement (one-way) from Alaska to Mexico is equivalent to 78,470,000 body lengths. Look for them in spring in California, summer in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska, and fall in the Rocky Mountains as they make their annual circuit of the West.

Nests and young are most protected by: BC Wildlife Act Section 34. Nest is only protected under the federal MBCA if it contains a live bird or a viable egg.

Identification: In good light, male Rufous Hummingbirds glow like coals: bright orange on the back and belly, with a vivid iridescent-red throat. Females are green above with rufous-washed flanks, rufous patches in the green tail, and often a spot of orange in the throat. (Male L, Female R in photo).

Habitat: breed in open or shrubby areas, forest openings, yards, and parks, and sometimes in forests, thickets, swamps, and meadows from sea level to about 6,000 feet.

Wildlife assessments are done for environmental permitting and in line with conservation efforts. Wildlife assessments can be conducted for single or multi species within a variety of habitats. During a Wildlife Assessment, wildlife and their habitats are distinguished, categorized, and eventually mapped.

These assessments often include the determination of the presence or absence of wildlife and it’s current or past use within the vicinity. These assessments may involve the utilization of wildlife tracking, auditory technology, wildlife cameras, and wildlife interpretive signs. Wildlife Assessments can include Bird Nest Sweeps, Amphibian Salvage, Fish Salvage and more.

These assessments are often conducted when there are any possible protected and priority wildlife species and/or statutory designated sites that may be impacted by a development project. It enables one a simple check to help clarify whether a proposed site needs further professional environmental advice, assessment, or if construction is even possible.

Have you ever noticed the massive amounts of moss on Vancouver Island?

Moss is an ancient plant and remnants of moss appeared around 400 million years ago. Moss is nonvascular and grows in moist environments, requires little to no soil and can often be found growing on rocks and trees, making moss a most hearty plant species. Moss helps to create soil by breaking down rock and other natural materials. And because moss aids in the creation of soil, holds large amounts of water, and creates its own ecosystem, it makes sense that moss is one of the first plants to appear on disturbed or decimated land. Moss can be found almost anywhere on earth and Vancouver Island is home to a multitude of mosses.

Some moss types found on Vancouver Island:

Bryum Miniatum Moss - Glossy red-brown in color, and sometimes a rich green color.

Mood Moss - Has a lush green appearance with distinctive leaves that are shaped like delicate spearheads.

Plagiothecium Undulatum Moss – Is a pale yellow-green mat moss also commonly called tongue moss because of its characteristic leaf undulations or a tongue like texture.

Polytrichum Juniperinum Moss - Also known as juniper hair cap moss, has reddish stems clothed with evenly spaced, untoothed light green leaves and a distinctive red tip.

Polytricum Piliferum Moss - is dark green in color but changes to brown with age.

Red Sphagnum Moss - is a small, reddish coloured moss and has a dense, rounded head with egg-shaped stem leaves, and pore less stems.

Step Moss – Also known as glittering wood moss is a very distinctive moss species. It branches twice so that the small lower branch forms a "step" with a large number of small feathery filaments.
